SUMMARY:The Black Belt Problem: When Confidence Gets You Hurt by Grant Haroway
DESCRIPTION:WHY ATTEND \n\nBecause the gap between feeling secure and being secure is exactly where breaches happen – and most businesses have no idea how wide that gap is.\n\n\nBecause the people best placed to explain prevention are the ones who’ve been in the room when it fails. Grant has responded to hundreds of breaches. He’s seen what allowed every single one of them to happen.\n\n\nBecause the same thinking that gives a black belt false confidence in a street fight is giving businesses false confidence about their security – and once you see the pattern\, you can’t unsee it.\n\nWHAT WE WILL SHOW YOU \n\nHow close to twenty years of training and teaching martial arts led to a hard realisation – the training didn’t work when it actually counted – and exactly what that has to do with how most businesses approach their security.\n\n\nWhy following industry best practice can feel like protection while leaving you exposed\, and what a security approach built around your actual threat looks like instead.\n\n\nHow the thinking behind real-world self-defence – knowing your attacker\, understanding deception\, getting the priorities the right way around – maps directly onto the decisions business owners make every day\, whether they realise it or not.\n\nWHAT ARE THE BENEFITS \n\nA clearer read on where your real business exposure is – not more tools or compliance boxes\, but an honest lens on what the actual risk looks like.\n\n\nThe ability to ask better questions of your IT provider\, your advisers\, and yourself – and to recognise whether the answers you’re getting are built on understanding your specific threat or on doing what everyone else does.\n\n\nA framework for testing whether what you’re relying on would survive contact with a real attacker – not a theoretical one operating in a controlled environment.\n\nWHAT WILL YOU WALK AWAY WITH \n\nOne question that cuts through the noise: is what I’m relying on built for the threat I actually face\, or for the comfortable version of it?\n\n\nA clear understanding of where most businesses over-invest in security and where they under-invest – and why the ratio is almost always the wrong way around.\n\n\nA way of thinking about risk in your business that goes well beyond “we’ve got antivirus\, and we do the annual training video” – and that applies whether or not you ever speak to a cybersecurity firm.\n\nHOW WILL YOU FEEL AFTER \n\nLike someone held up a mirror to how you’ve been thinking about risk in your business – in the most useful possible way\, not the most comfortable one.\n\n\nUnsettled enough to ask a question you probably haven’t asked\, but clear enough on what to do about it that the answer doesn’t feel overwhelming.\n\n\nLike the Q&A was the most valuable part of the morning\, because if the previous sessions are anything to go by\, it usually is.\n\nWHO SHOULD ATTEND AND WHY \n\nBusiness owners and directors who make decisions about technology or risk\nAnyone who’s said “we follow best practice” without being sure what threat it addresses\nSomeone in your network who’s had a near-miss and still isn’t sure if they’re protected or just lucky \n\n  \nABOUT THE PRESENTER: GRANT HAROWAY \nGrant Haroway has spent close to two decades in cybersecurity\, specialising in digital forensics and incident response. He is the Managing Director of SiegeBrake\, the firm he founded in 2021\, which responds to breaches\, investigates incidents\, and helps Australian organisations build genuine resilience against attack. He has responded to hundreds of incidents – ransomware\, nation-state attacks\, insider threats\, fraud – and uses that firsthand knowledge to help businesses understand and close the gaps that allowed each one to happen. \nBetween building his career and founding SiegeBrake\, Grant spent six years travelling continuously through close to 140 countries. It shaped how he thinks\, how he engages with people\, and how he sees the world – and he hasn’t quite stopped since. \nHe is also the founder of NoBS Self Defence\, a reality-based self-defence system built on close to twenty years of training and teaching traditional martial arts\, and the recognition that most of it didn’t prepare students for real violence. He trains civilians\, members of Victoria Police\, and Australian Border Force\, and is a contributing member of the Active Cyber Defence Alliance. \n
